Bremerhaven, Rotterdam or Antwerp? How to choose the port of clearance

3 min read

Most cars from the USA land in Bremerhaven, Rotterdam or Antwerp – but they can be cleared in any of 43 EU ports. The port decides the VAT rate, the port fees and how far the car travels by road. Here is how to compare them for your address.

Three things the port changes

  1. 1Import VAT: you pay the rate of the port country – 19% in Germany, 21% in the Netherlands and Belgium, up to 25% in Scandinavia.
  2. 2Fees: terminal handling, devanning and the customs agent differ by port.
  3. 3Road distance: the cheaper VAT port may be far from your home.

Bremerhaven vs Rotterdam vs Antwerp

RotterdamNetherlands21%About 2 weeks

Bremerhaven is one of Europe’s largest car terminals and has frequent container and RoRo services from the US, which keeps prices competitive. Rotterdam and Antwerp are equally well connected and are often the natural choice for Benelux, France and western Germany. Hamburg is an alternative for northern and eastern Germany, while Gdynia and Klaipėda serve Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltics.

VAT difference in practice

On a VAT base of €15,000, two percentage points of VAT mean €300. Clearing in Germany at 19% instead of a 21% country therefore saves €300 – but only if the extra road transport costs less than that and you still end up with the documents you need for registration at home. For a high-VAT country such as Hungary (27%) or the Nordic countries (25–25.5%), the difference to a 19% port is larger and can easily justify a longer drive.

When a ‘foreign’ port is cheaper

If your home country has a high VAT rate, clearing in a country with a lower one can save more than the extra road transport costs. Some countries additionally charge excise or registration tax at home, so the comparison must be done door to door.

Port fees and delivery

Unloading a shared container and terminal handling usually cost about €400–500 per car, and a customs agent about €250, with differences between ports. Road transport is priced per kilometre: a car carrier is cheaper per car on popular routes, a tow truck is faster but dearer for long distances. A non-running car limits your options and makes distance more expensive.

Sailing times

From the US East Coast the North Sea ports are the fastest (about 2 weeks). From Japan and the UAE, ships come through Suez, so Mediterranean ports such as Koper, Genoa or Piraeus are a week or more faster than the North Sea.

How to choose: a quick method

  1. 1List the 3–6 ports closest to your address by road.
  2. 2For each, add port fees, customs agent and delivery cost to your door.
  3. 3Calculate VAT at each port country’s rate on CIF + duty + transport to destination.
  4. 4Add your national registration costs, which do not depend on the port.
  5. 5Pick the lowest door-to-door total, then check sailing frequency from your US port.

Other factors besides price

  • Sailing frequency: a port with weekly departures from your US port gets your car faster
  • Customs agent: an agent who handles many private imports avoids delays
  • Storage: free days at the terminal are limited, then daily storage is charged
  • Pick-up: some terminals release cars only to registered transport companies
  • Documents: make sure the agent sends the customs papers your registration authority needs

The cheapest port on paper is not always the best if containers to it are rare or the agent is slow. Ask your broker which EU ports they ship to regularly and compare those first. For running cars on RoRo, check which ports the RoRo lines from your US port actually call at.

Questions & answers

Can I clear the car in another country and register it at home?

Yes. You pay import VAT in the port country and register the car at home with the customs documents.

Which ports handle the most cars from the USA?

Bremerhaven, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg on the North Sea, plus Baltic ports such as Gdynia and Klaipėda for Central and Eastern Europe.

Is Bremerhaven or Rotterdam cheaper?

Germany’s 19% VAT is lower than the Netherlands’ 21%, but port fees and road distance to your home decide. Compare both door to door.
